Palmers Butchers has been in the same family since Archer Bird took over the business from Eastcott Palmer in 1962. Three generations down the line and the business is still going strong.

Palmers aim to buy everything as locally as possible and prepare everything on the premises.

This includes making their own sausages, pork pies, scotch eggs (which we now have in three varieties), pasties, pies, sausage rolls, hogs pudding and faggots. All their cooked meats are prepared in the shop so from start to finish they know how everything is made and what goes in it.

Palmers still buy all their meat in carcase form, which is boned out and prepared by their skilled butchers.

Customer service is also important to Palmers. No enquiry is either too big or too small. They love to hear laughter in the shop and their friendly banter with customers has many going away with a smile on their face, and sometimes with meat as well!

Their aim is too please and they are always open to positive suggestions to help improve their service to the town. Palmer’s latest initiative has been to set up an online ordering website, which can be found at You can select your chosen products from the comfort of your home and have them delivered or ready to be collected from the shop. Everything from the shop is available online – just not the friendly staff!
