Kaleidoscope Toys

Walking into Kaleidoscope Toys is an experience that leaves every child (and adult) filled with wonder. Every nook and cranny is used with even more toys hanging from the ceiling.  That special present or sought after treat is likely to be here somewhere.

Totally Locally Hidden Gems 800px 72dpi-046

This family business was started in 1976 when Mark was 8, and having grown up in the business there’s not much he doesn’t know about toys. In 2005, wife Valerie joined Mark, when his father Tom retired. The shop continues to evolve and update without losing its character.

It’s always worth asking if you can’t find what you want as there’s lots more than meets the eyes and they are always ready to help. Kaleidoscope stock many of the major toy companies like Lego, Hasbro, Fisher Price, Mattel, Playmobil, Brio and Sylvanian Families, together with companies like Orchard Toys, Galt, WOW, Ty and Revell to name a small selection. They are also licensed to sell fireworks all year around for Fireworks Night, New Year or that special occasion.

Play Planet

Play Planet is a family-run soft play centre for ages 0–11, with plenty to keep your little ones entertained. They have ball pools, slides, rollers and nets to challenge and stimulate the children. As the mother of a 2-year-old, owner Laura understands that finding safe, fun and entertaining places for young children to go, where you might also be able to take a sneaky read of a magazine or have a good chat with friends, is rare, but she and her team are here to help!

Totally Locally Hidden Gems 800px 72dpi-043

While the kids are burning off some energy, you can sit back and relax in their café area, where they serve freshly ground fair-trade coffee and lovely big mugs of tea. All their food is locally sourced where possible and made-to-order, with something for everyone on their menu of light lunches, snacks and drinks.

Their cakes are delicious, with a changing array of choices – although you are almost certain to find their favourite caramel shortcake on every visit! They have also started selling Langage Farm ice cream, so you can keep cool on hot days.

Based on Crelake Industrial Estate (next to the Royal Mail sorting office), Play Planet is a short walk from the Meadows and offers free parking. Baby changing facilities are available onsite and it is accessible for those in wheelchairs.

Looking for somewhere to have your child’s party? Or an outing from playgroup or nursery?  Then look no further. Play Planet can provide invitations, decorations, food and drink, and guaranteed fun for 2 hours. The kids will have a great time, and you won’t need to clear up!  Or why not have the place to yourselves?  Private hire options are also available.

Totally Locally Hidden Gems 800px 72dpi-044

Play Planet also runs a music class called Zoo Music. The lovely Mia picks a different weekly theme (Australia, Under the Sea and Easter have been favourites so far) and leads the children in songs, dancing and instrument playing, ending with parachute fun and bubbles, with lots of props along the way. It’s a great way to spend a Monday morning. There are two groups: join in from 9.00 am for 18 months and above or from 11.00 am for under 18 months. It’s also a great way to socialise and meet other parents and grandparents.

The entrance fee is just £3.50 for all children over 1, with no charge for adults and they only impose their two-hour session time if they’re really busy. Laura, Lisa, Louisa, Emma and the rest of the Play Planet team look forward to welcoming you!

Café Liason

Four years ago Matt and Lee took over Cafe Liaison… and the time has absolutely flown by.

Cafe Liaison is situated next to St Eustachius Church and has a wonderful view over the churchyard. It’s a friendly, atmospheric cafe, serving locally sourced homemade food and excellent coffee. Upstairs you’ll find a wonderful cosy lounge, just right to chill out and meet with friends.

Totally Locally Hidden Gems 800px 72dpi-035

As well as a full menu, there is a daily specials board where you’ll always find a freshly prepared soup of the day (the chef makes wonderful soup! ), as well as other homemade goodies. Homemade chilli, local steaks and great salads are just a few of the choices on offer, and their soup-and-a-sandwich deals during week days offer great value for money.

A huge batch of scones are freshly made every day and cream teas are extremely popular … after all, Tavistock Abbey is apparently where the cream tea was invented!

The cafe is fully licensed, serving local draught lager and a good choice of wines and spirits.Totally Locally Hidden Gems 800px 72dpi-036

ABC Service and ABC Giftware

Brett Kinsman-Daw runs two companies in Tavistock: ABC Service, providing a range of computer products, with the majority done on an ‘order on demand’ basis; and ABC Giftware, providing a range of candles. Both operate online and from his stall in the Pannier Market.

Totally Locally Hidden Gems 800px 72dpi-042

Initially enrolled in a BTEC Level 3 Child Care, Learning and Development course in Tavistock College sixth form, Brett had a sudden career change and left after one year to set up ABC Service in the Pannier Market offering website design, graphic design, computer support, anti-virus software and second-hand computer games on one day a week. On Saturdays, he worked for another market trader with a giftware business, which he subsequently took over one month later and ABC Giftware was born.

Over the last four years, ABC Giftware has been going through changes to focus on candles, and ABC Services to provide computer retail and to develop its many services. While Brett entered into retail with no prior experience, he has since expanded his knowledge of marketing, graphic design, website design, SEO and much more, through building his successful businesses.

Here and Far

A new addition to Paddons Row, Here and Far is the place to go for unusual and eco-friendly contemporary gifts and homewares, plus unique upcycled furniture.

Owners Kat and Natasha source the majority of their stock from reputable fair-trade suppliers, bringing the traditional crafts and skills of overseas artisans from developing countries to Tavistock, while ensuring the makers of all their items have been paid fairly and work in safe, comfortable conditions.

Totally Locally Hidden Gems 800px 72dpi-023

As well as supporting craftspeople from ‘far’ away, a growing range of items are sourced right ‘here’ in the southwest or the wider UK, helping to support the local economy and giving an outlet for several local artists and craftspeople to sell their work.

Recycled materials feature heavily in Here and Far’s range: from recycled aluminium coasters and bowls, upcycled bike chain clocks and wall hooks, and recycled cotton waste paper cards and notebooks, to recycled iron windchimes, reused tin can model vehicles, and recycled glassware.

Recent additions include garden clocks and vegetable labels made from recycled plant pots and coffee cups by a Cornish-based company, and recycled circuitboard notebooks and accessories produced by another UK-based company.

Totally Locally Hidden Gems 800px 72dpi-024

Kat and Natasha also enjoy giving old furniture a new lease of life using Annie Sloan’s Chalk PaintTM, of which they are Tavistock’s exclusive stockist. Affordably priced, each piece is different, from grand country-style dressers to tiny side tables. Some pieces are also sourced from other local ‘upcyclers’.

Always on the look-out for new and interesting items, Here and Far’s range is constantly growing and changing, so it’s worth popping in regularly to see what else has arrived!

Robertson’s Organic Café

Robertson’s Restaurant is Tavistock’s “Foodie” destination for gourmet pizzas, fresh salads, sandwiches, pastas and meals. With an emphasis on organic and local ingredients, Robertson’s serves lunch and dinner 6 days a week, also with a pizza delivery service in the evenings.

Totally Locally Hidden Gems 800px 72dpi-013

Opened in 2006 by husband and wife team Seth and Sally Robertson, the restaurant has evolved over the years from organic sandwich and juice bar to fully-licensed gourmet pizzeria and restaurant. Every meal is homemade, ranging from Asian-inspired chicken dishes to Italian-themed pastas, risottos, local seafood and of course their famous pizzas.

In 2010 Robertson’s was awarded by the Observer’s Food Magazine “the best pizza in the Southwest, with a huge local following”, recognising their use of fresh homemade dough, homemade sauce, innovative toppings and their authentic Italian stone-based pizza ovens. Much of their produce is grown locally, including some salads and herbs, which are homegrown and picked daily.

Treasured Forever

Treasured Forever was established in September 2009. Owner Alison works with many mediums of craft, but specialises in costume jewellery.

“I am so lucky to have a job that I love and think about from dawn to dusk … always thinking of new designs and ways of making that perfect piece of jewellery,” says Alison, who is known by the nickname Beeg or BG (Beadgirl).

Totally Locally Hidden Gems 800px 72dpi-017

She undertakes many commissions and is pleased to say that every idea that a customer has come in with has been fulfilled, and they have gone away with a special piece of jewellery, made to measure and unique.

She never makes the same thing twice. A quirky selling point she has is, whenever possible, making three earrings to go with a necklace – a spare, in case you are wondering why!

Totally Locally Hidden Gems 800px 72dpi-018

After her love of jewellery making is Decopatch – sticking pretty bits of special paper to … well, whatever you want to, to upcycle furniture, photo frames, lamps, cupboards, staircases, and even car hub caps (which Alison has done on her own car)!

All her work is showcased on her Facebook page and her Decopatch is for sale at www.treasuredforever.weebly.com as well as in the shop.

As a Tavi girl, she loves experiencing the ambience of the town and its people from the dimension of a shop owner. Everyone helps everyone and she is very happy to be a part of it.

Cakes, Bakes ‘n’ Shakes

Cake, Bakes ‘n’ Shakes is a traditional bakery located in the heart of Tavistock.

Buster Brown, previous owner of The Mary Tavy Inn, and Tony Dwelly, who learnt his trade as apprentice of the infamous Bill the baker, noticed the lack of onsite prepared and cooked foods in Tavistock, so decided to take an old fishing tackle shop and convert it into a small bakery specialising in homemade bread, cakes, milkshakes and savouries, including delicious pasties and sausage rolls all produced using meat locally sourced from Howells of Tavistock.

Totally Locally Hidden Gems 800px 72dpi-032

Cakes Bakes ‘n’ Shakes also provide outside catering, including buffets for weddings, christenings and birthdays from £4.50 per person.

Being established for two years, they have listened to their customers’ feedback and used this to broaden their product range, moving with the times to create the now large selection of freshly made produce that is made onsite daily.

A wide range of breads are baked daily, with Buster and Tony getting up at 5.00 am to bake in the traditional way. Available daily are spelt and rye breads suitable for people with wheat intolerance, and a new gluten-free bread, which is proving popular (order only).

Totally Locally Hidden Gems 800px 72dpi-033

Lunch time is a popular time at Cakes, Bakes ‘n’ Shakes, with a selection of sandwiches made from their own bread or sub rolls, filled with delicious freshly produced fillings.

Since opening in 2011 they have produced a popular and ever-increasing selection of buns, from Belgian buns topped with glazed cherries to their much-loved Chelsea buns, and after high demand, they started making their own homemade doughnuts.

Also included in their product range is a wide array of tasty cupcakes, muffins and tarts, from treacle tarts to pecan pies, along with a variety of real fresh cream cakes, including their well-known bannoffee pie and cream doughnuts. Loaf cakes, produced onsite, are also available with the choices growing weekly, including tantalising toffee, chunky choc chip and Danish apple.

They have produced a multitude of celebration cakes since opening, from Bob the Builder through to wedding cakes. Visit their Facebook page to see their range, and next time you need a celebration cake pop in and have a chat.

Cakes, Bakes ‘n’ Shakes pride themselves on serving the biggest, tastiest milkshakes in the area using locally produced ice cream. Pop in and try one, you won’t be disappointed!

Welcoming phone orders, they deliver to local businesses for lunch, or to your home if you just can’t get away to do your shopping.

No matter what, they do their best to support other local businesses, donating to local charities and sponsoring good causes, and using local businesses wherever possible.

“We try our best to cater to everyone within the area ranging from gluten and wheat-free bread to birthday cakes and treats. I really enjoy the buzz I get when a customer tells me how much they like what we do best,” says Buster Brown.

Cakes, Bakes ‘n’ Shakes welcome customers old and new and wherever possible, try to accommodate any requests for new products, a special celebration cake or a private function.

Roots and Vines

Roots and Vines, having just celebrated their first year, came from the idea of Jason Biram

that the market town of Tavistock needed a locally sourced produce shop utilising all the great producers from the area as well as giving customers a great experience and customer service.

Totally Locally Hidden Gems 800px 72dpi-010

After working in retail for over 20 years on behalf of other people, Jason felt it was time to have a go himself, with the aim of offering a wide range of local produce and ensuring that what the customer wants he makes every effort to get.

The shop aims to provide Tavistock and surrounding areas with the freshest seasonal fruits and vegetables with as much as possible sourced from the local area, such as Lifton Farm, Tamar Valley and Tavy Ales to name a few.

Country Cheeses

Country Cheeses started out 24 years ago on a table in Tavistock Pannier Market with six local cheeses. They stock a few more now, in fact their cabinets are bulging with the best cheeses you can find anywhere and they all happen to be British and mostly from the Westcountry.

Totally Locally Hidden Gems 800px 72dpi-004

Owners Gary and Elise select, collect and mature the cheeses themselves, so have an intimate knowledge of all they sell. They are able to paint a real picture of where these cheeses come from and know how they are made. The cheeses are enhanced by being matured in suitable conditions. They also have a cheese cave now that provides an excellent environment for some of the harder cheeses to develop.

Country Cheeses have won Gold at the Devon County Show with their Cave Aged Yarg. “We are extraordinarily lucky in this part of the country to have such amazing cheesemakers and ‘cheese eaters’!  Long live ‘real’ cheese!” says Elise.

Crebers

N H Creber Ltd was established in 1881 by Rob Creber’s great grandfather John Carter. John married Mary Geake and they had Winifred Anne, Rob’s grandmother. In those days it was known as Carters stores and was a real old-fashioned grocers.

Winifred married Henry Creber and under her guidance it grew. Their son Norman, Rob’s father took over until the early 1970s when Rob came into the business and carried on after having a spell in London with Harrods and Jacksons of Piccadilly. In 1989, Crebers won “Delicatessen of the Year”.

Totally Locally Hidden Gems 800px 72dpi-020

Crebers were the first and only to roast coffee in the town, and were the first to have refrigeration in the town.

It is with the ethos of “quality and service” that Crebers traded in the old days, and they still do today. Now they are a “deli” rather than a “grocer” and concentrate heavily on fresh food especially that made in their own kitchens, such as pates and terrines, salads, scotch eggs, pork pies, cooked hams and cooked meats, and “home cured” bacon. Their smoked salmon is second to none!

Crebers believe their deli is unique as they use all their own recipes, and do not use preservatives or chemical additives or any other such “nasties”.

Totally Locally Hidden Gems 800px 72dpi-021

They produce hampers to suit individual requirements, so customers can have packed what the recipient would like, not what they want to sell them!

Crebers is well worth a look, even if it’s just to enjoy the old-fashioned charm of the surroundings and browse the culinary treasures that pack the wooden shelves.

“I hope you will be pleasantly surprised at the fact that we are a real deli with high quality and keen prices,” says Rob. “We are really not expensive and in many cases our prices are well below supermarkets for a superior product!”

Palmers

Palmers Butchers has been in the same family since Archer Bird took over the business from Eastcott Palmer in 1962. Three generations down the line and the business is still going strong.

Palmers aim to buy everything as locally as possible and prepare everything on the premises.

Totally Locally Hidden Gems 800px 72dpi-015

This includes making their own sausages, pork pies, scotch eggs (which we now have in three varieties), pasties, pies, sausage rolls, hogs pudding and faggots. All their cooked meats are prepared in the shop so from start to finish they know how everything is made and what goes in it.

Palmers still buy all their meat in carcase form, which is boned out and prepared by their skilled butchers.

Customer service is also important to Palmers. No enquiry is either too big or too small. They love to hear laughter in the shop and their friendly banter with customers has many going away with a smile on their face, and sometimes with meat as well!

Totally Locally Hidden Gems 800px 72dpi-016

Their aim is too please and they are always open to positive suggestions to help improve their service to the town. Palmer’s latest initiative has been to set up an online ordering website, which can be found at www.tavistockbutchers.co.uk. You can select your chosen products from the comfort of your home and have them delivered or ready to be collected from the shop. Everything from the shop is available online – just not the friendly staff!
